5 Facts About Patterns

A pattern is a repeated arrangement of elements, such as shapes, colors, or objects, that creates a recognizable and predictable structure or design.

Patterns can be found all around us, from the intricate swirls of seashells to the symmetrical petals of a flower, from the stripes of a zebra to the spots on a leopard.

In art, patterns adorn textiles, decorate ceramics, and embellish architecture. They're also a fundamental concept in mathematics, where they help describe everything from fractals to tessellations.

Even in the simple act of doodling, we create patterns – the repetitive strokes and shapes forming unique designs. In everyday life, patterns bring order to our routines, from the familiar layout of a city grid to the rhythmic sequence of music notes.
Doodling and coloring patterns not only spark creativity; they also help to focus and relax the mind!

Coloring Patterns for Anxiety

Did you know that coloring and drawing patterns can be incredibly relaxing, especially when we're feeling stressed or overwhelmed?

When I was younger, I often found myself doodling patterns in my notebooks — typically during classes, I'll admit. But it wasn't out of boredom; rather, I was naturally drawn to it. I believe my brain discovered a natural way to unwind and concentrate. Drawing helped me listen more attentively in class and eased my anxiety.

Many years later, thanks to my profession and experiences with my own students, I understood why I was so inclined to draw and color patterns. It was my way to find focus, to find 'my center,' and to redirect my anxiety to something more positive. Without realizing it, I was practicing mindfulness through a simple activity like drawing doodles on a page.

Nowadays, research shows that drawing and coloring patterns can act as a brain exercise, especially for those with Alzheimer's or memory loss. These fun activities can also help children and adults with attention difficulties to focus by redirecting their extra energy.

Even though I'm no longer a teenager, doodling and coloring patterns remain valuable tools for me. Nowadays, I engage in these activities more consciously, recognizing how mindful coloring aids in slowing down, breathing deeply, clearing my mind, and minimizing overthinking.

Have you ever tried drawing or coloring patterns? 💛💜💛💜💛💜
